After marveling at the expanse, beauty, and bounty of her garden, Bruce used his wind power to liberate ripe fruit, nuts, and seeds from her trees while Gren and Auria collected them. Gren and Jack were patient with the tiny powerhouse, and they even seemed to enjoy frolicking with the young elemental guardian. Beverly smiled. This was the stuff of fairy tales.

At least until a wicked witch, ogre, or Chimera came along. But that was the point, wasn’t it? The metal, might, and wits of the heroine—or hero—needed to be tested. Good and evil at their most basic had to spar in order to maintain balance. The cosmic scales that governed the world, life, people, and elementals alike were held in balance by battle.

Would the Chimera tip the scales by destroying Beverly and her garden, or would she hold her own with the help of Gren?

“You need more than Gren, you know.”

Bruce’s voice brought her out of her philosophical musings and back to reality.

“We managed,” she said, not liking the direction she suspected Bruce was headed.

He joined her on the top step of her cabin’s front porch and accepted a glass of cider. Gren and Auria were tending to the animals now. None of the predators, livestock, fish, or foul were afraid of them. In spite of Gren’s size and power, not to mention Auria’s command of wind and enchanted Phoenix fire, which she used to roast nuts, her wildlife and domestic stock trusted the pair.

“You could learn a thing or two from them.”

“Bruce, I trust you and your daughter. I’m sure your mate is trustworthy, too. But not every elemental guardian is like you. Many would want to take the garden from me and use it to enrich their own power. Others would say a hybrid Dryad isn’t fit to guard such a treasure.”

Bruce sighed. “That’s why you must choose your allies carefully. You have air and fire with my family. You need water and earth allies—”

He held up a hand to stop her interruption. “Yes, yes, I know you’re an earth elemental, but did you ever consider the possibility that this garden was made to share with your kind?”

She paused, considering. Had she been selfish, keeping this to herself?

“My mother told me I must keep it safe from those who would exploit its bounty and strip it of its resources.”

“Hmm…” Bruce said, taking another sip of cider. “This is really good, by the way. Well, hello there!”

Scamp had climbed the steps to the porch and then hopped on to Bruce’s lap, head-butting his hand and demanding attention. Bruce obliged, laughing as the little squirrel went belly up in contentment.

Had her mother meant for her to share? She’d viewed the command through the lens of a child, new to her powers and a little frightened by them. Her fellow Dryad hybrids had warned her to keep a low profile lest she be exploited by pureblood elementals. But times were changing, and she’d played a small part in that change.
